Lufthansa’s Biggest Investor to Back Government Bailout Deal

(Bloomberg) — Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s biggest stockholder publicly backed a 9 billion-euro ($10 billion) government bailout, giving the rescue plan a major shot of momentum and boosting the airline’s shares and bonds just before a crunch vote.

With Heinz Hermann Thiele declaring support after days of frenzied speculation about his intentions, the state rescue appears likely to secure the two-thirds backing required at Thursday’s special shareholders meeting. The German billionaire who had earlier criticized the conditions held the votes to single-handedly stop the deal and plunge Europe’s largest airline into turmoil.

A failure of the landmark bailout, which featured the state buying a heavily discounted 20% stake in the airline, would also have been a serious blow to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s efforts to take a more activist approach to managing Germany’s economy.

Thiele eased those concerns by saying he “will vote in favor” of the plan at the meeting, according

California’s largest state worker union accepts two furlough days in pay cut deal with Newsom

State workers represented by California’s largest public employees union will take two furlough days per month for two years under an agreement with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration, according to details posted online Friday night.

The two furlough days for SEIU Local 1000 equate to a 9.23 percent pay reduction, but will be partially offset by suspended payments to retirement health care, according to the agreement. Workers may choose the days they take off.

The union, which represents about 100,000 state workers in custodial, administrative, nursing and a range of other roles, will also delay for two years a general salary increase of 2.5 percent that had been scheduled for July 1.

Some workers in hard-to-recruit job classifications will still receive special salary increases ranging from about a half-percent to about 10 percent, according to the agreement.

Local 1000 is the second state union to reach an agreement with the governor’s

Australian regulator says Google’s $2.1 billion Fitbit deal could harm competition

By Byron Kaye and Shashwat Awasthi

SYDNEY/BENGALURU (Reuters) – Australia’s antitrust regulator warned Google’s planned $2.1 billion acquisition of fitness tracker maker Fitbit may give it too much of people’s data, potentially hurting competition in health and online advertising markets.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is the first regulator to voice concerns about the deal, which come at a time when the Alphabet Inc-owned tech giant is at loggerheads with the Australian government over planned new rules about how internet companies use personal information.

“Buying Fitbit will allow Google to build an even more comprehensive set of user data, further cementing its position and raising barriers to entry to potential rivals,” ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said in a statement on Thursday.

“User data available to Google has made it so valuable to advertisers that it faces only limited competition,” he added.

The regulator said its concerns were preliminary

Boris Johnson has called on the three EU presidents to put a “tiger in the tank” of Brexit negotiations and said he sees “no reason” why a deal cannot be done in July.

There was renewed optimism in London and Brussels about the prospects of finally breaking the deadlock over fishing, the level playing field guarantees and the European Court of Justice after the video call, which was held online because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I don’t think we are actually that far apart,” the Prime Minister said, “but what we need to see now is a bit of oomph in the negotiations.”

“The faster we can do this, the better. We see no reason why you shouldn’t get that done in July,” the
