The deadline to file federal taxes has finally arrived—it’s Wednesday, July 15 FYI—meaning if you haven’t yet completed your forms, now is the time. While tax season is often stressful no matter when you file, getting your documents together and knowing your options, like qualifying for a low-income waiver or filing for an additional extension, are valid ways to make the process way easier. The easiest way to lessen the last-minute stress, though: Use a great online tax software to file.

If you don’t have a personal accountant, a tax software program will expedite the process of locating tax breaks, calculating refunds, and navigating any law changes. After testing some of the most popular online tax software, we found the best ones—and right now, you can score some great deals for last-minute filing all at different price points.
TurboTax Deluxe – Save up to 20%
When we set out to find the best online tax programs available, Intuit TurboTax Deluxe was a clear winner. Right now, you can get a discount on TurboTax Deluxe to file your federal and state taxes—or just your federal taxes. For federal taxes only, the TurboTax Deluxe download for Mac or PC is $39.80 right now on Amazon, giving you a 20% discount off the typical $49.99 price. Need to file your state taxes as well? The deluxe and state version is also on sale for just $49.80, falling a little more than $10 from its original price of $59.99. The download can be installed on up to five computers and requires both a free Intuit account and product activation online.
The software is designed to run through every financial nook and cranny, thanks to the carefully guided questions and explanations. Our tester found that TurboTax Deluxe worked best for those that need extra-clear tax guidance or have more complicated finances, like freelancers or landlords. It automatically shows the most relevant tax forms to fill out after analyzing your documents, and even alerts potential paperwork errors and notifies deductions that you can claim—meaning you can file last-minute without worrying you missed something.
H&R Block Deluxe – Save up to 22%
If you want something a little less expensive, H&R Block Deluxe is a good option. Our second favorite tax software allows you to file by yourself or with a pro via mobile app or through the downloaded software. To file federal taxes only, the deluxe program is normally priced at $34.99, but is on sale at Amazon right now for $24.99, giving you $10 in savings. To file state taxes in addition to federal, the deluxe and state download is discounted as well to $34.99 from $44.99, down 22%. Note that the PC download does require an operating system of Windows 7 or higher, while Mac needs Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks or Mac OS Catalina 10.15.
H&R Block Deluxe is geared more towards the most confident tax filers. Like TurboTax, it asks clear and concise questions that help look for common tax breaks, plus it handles Form 1040, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), child tax credits, and gave the option to claim student loan interest deduction.
TaxSlayer – Save up to 25%
TaxSlayer, another program we tested, is also offering a major discount on its federal return plans. While it was the cheapest system on our list (the classic program retails at $17, and you can start for free), it wasn’t our favorite. However, we still recommended it for confident filers that need minimal guidance. From now until tomorrow, July 15 at 11:59 p.m. EST, you can save 25% on your chosen TaxSlayer plan (classic, premium or self-employed) using code OFFERS25. As soon as you sign up, you can begin answering questions and uploading documents to start the filing process—no download or waiting necessary.
