Feel like the YouTube name you made up when you first started is holding you back from hitting that next subscriber milestone? Want to reinvent yourself without starting a new channel? You’ve come to the right place. This guide won’t help you make a living online, but it might give your channel the makeover it needs by teaching you how to change your YouTube name in just a few quick steps.
Before you read on, keep in mind that this guide is focused exclusively on changing the name on your channel — that is, the name that appears when people visit your channel’s main page. If you want to change its URL, you can create a custom one if you’re eligible, or delete it and create a new one, but you can’t change an existing custom URL.
Also, bear in mind that although you can change your name a couple of times in quick succession if you want to try out a few options, Google won’t let you keep doing so forever, so make sure to give it some thought before going through the process.
Changing your YouTube name: If you have a standard, non-branded account
You can change your YouTube name on a standard, non-branded YouTube account, but your name on all other Google services changes too, like Gmail. That’s because you’re altering the name associated with your Google account.
If your YouTube account is a Brand Account, scroll down to the next section for instructions.
Step 1: Sign in to your YouTube account. To do so, click the Sign In button in the top right of the YouTube homepage and input your credentials.
Step 2: Click your profile picture in the top right corner and select Settings on the drop-down menu.
Step 3: Under the Your YouTube Channel section, select the Edit on Google link to change your name.
Step 4: On the following screen, change your First name and Last name to what you want your channel to be called. Click the Save button to finish.
Want to use a nickname? You can! Here’s how to add it:
Step 1: From the Name screen, click the back arrow icon to the left of the word Name.
Step 2: The bottom text field changes to Nickname. Click its pencil icon located to its right.
Step 3: On the next screen, enter the nickname you want to use.
Step 4: Click the Save button to complete.
Step 5: You return to the main Name page. Click the arrow to the right of Display Name As for a list of optional display choices.
Step 6: Click the Save button to c0mplete.
And that’s it! From there all of your associated Google accounts will use your new name, including your YouTube channel.
Changing your YouTube name: If you have a Brand Account
If your YouTube account is a Brand Account, you can change your YouTube name without changing your name on other Google Account services, like Gmail. We can think of plenty of reasons why this is handy, namely for keeping your professional and personal accounts separate. Check whether your YouTube name is a Brand Account by logging into Google and visiting the Brand Accounts settings. It’s easy to tell: Just see what name is on the Brand Accounts page under Your Brand Accounts. If you have a branded account, follow the steps below to swap your YouTube-only name.
Step 1: Go to YouTube and log in to your account. Click on your profile picture icon in the top right corner of the website.
Step 2: Select Settings on the drop-down menu.
Step 3: On the YouTube Account settings screen, click on Edit on Google. This loads your account’s About Me page.
Step 4: In the pop up square-shaped window, edit your YouTube name in the text box underneath the word Name.
Step 5: Click OK to save your changes.
Note: The pop up square-shaped window may say that changing your name will change it across all Google products. As noted, that’s not true for Brand Accounts. Changing your name for a YouTube Brand Account should only change it on YouTube. Your main Google Account should remain the same.
