We all have buyer’s remorse every now and then, or maybe that online purchase you made didn’t arrive as advertised. Whatever the reason, returning an item has become a common, albeit annoying, part of the shopping experience. According to a National Retail Federation report, around 10 percent of all purchases end up getting returned. And if you’re one of the thousands of customers who have returned Walmart purchases in recent years, you may be in luck. Walmart is currently facing a class action lawsuit for potentially underpaying customers who have returned items. With a new proposed settlement, if you have made a return at Walmart in the last five years, you may be entitled to more money. Keep reading to find out more about whether or not you’re eligible, and for more news from this mega retailer, discover why Walmart Is Offering This for the First Time Ever.

The class action lawsuit, Pearlstone v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., claims that “Walmart violated the law by incorrectly calculating and refunding the sales taxes it owed to customers who returned items purchased in store or online from Walmart or Sam’s Club after July 17, 2015.”

The two parties have reached a settlement—which means those who may have been affected are entitled to receive compensation. That includes anyone who was given a refund or credit when returning an item purchased from Walmart or Sam’s Club (in-store or online) between July 17, 2015 through Nov. 25, 2020, if they were refunded or credited sales tax that was less than the full amount of sales tax they paid when purchasing the item. However, despite the number of returns you may have made at Walmart over the past five years, each person is only allowed to receive one payment from the settlement.

If you are not sure if you have been affected, you can review the entire settlement agreement here or call 1-800-462-2905 to hear more about the case. The final approval hearing for the settlement will be held on Apr. 21, 2021.

If you think you have been affected, you must submit a claim before Apr. 1, 2021 to receive a payment. According to the settlement, “all Settlement Class Members who timely submit a valid claim are eligible to receive an equal share of a $5,000,000 settlement fund after deductions for attorneys’ fees, litigation expenses, and administrative costs associated with the Settlement.”

However, the claim form must include your full name, mailing address, email address, telephone number, and proof that you that you are a Settlement Class Member. Any incomplete forms will be deemed “ineligible for payment.” And for more up-to-date retail news delivered right to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.

Of course, even if you are affected, you’re not obligated to take any action in relation to the suit. However, if you are a Settlement Class Member, doing nothing means you will not receive a payment. And for more Walmart news, find out why Walmart Is Doing This Again as COVID Surges.
