If ever there was a holiday that feels positively designed for this endless year, it’s Small Business Saturday, no? Created by American Express in 2010 in response to the recession, the intention of the day is to spread some Black Friday and Cyber Monday love from the big box stores on down to local shops. And while a dollar spent at an indie beauty brand or a kitschy home goods store down the block have always packed a punch, small businesses have never been more in need of our support than they are right now.
With previously thriving businesses closing as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, this is our opportunity to really make a difference with our wallets. Happily, there are plenty of ways to take hold of that opportunity with both hands: Small Business Saturday 2020 falls on November 28, and there’s nearly an endless list of purveyors taking part.
If everyone lived in the same city, we could make recommendations of where to shop all day long, but barring that, Etsy is the next best thing. The site offers up art, home goods, jewelry, personalized gifts, beauty products, and much, much more — all crafted by independent sellers running their own online shops. Many of your favorite Etsy storefronts are likely offering up Small Business Saturday deals this year, so be sure to check. In the meantime, here are a few of our favorite shops to help get you started.

The jewelry on offer at this Chicago-based shop is so stunning that you’ll want to pick up a few pairs of anything you set your sights on. One to gift the chicest person on your list, and another for yourself — so you don’t dissolve into jealousy. The pair pictured above is the Tracy Earring, crafted from mother-of-pearl acrylic, and the pair is currently on sale for $36, down from $45.
Sifting through the racks at your favorite thrift store is one of those pleasures that may have felt completely out of reach throughout the pandemic. Thankfully, this custom streetwear and vintage apparel brand is here to lift the mood. The Atlanta store has breezy crop tops, screen-printed sweatshirts, and tie-dyed hoodies, and many are customizable. Send in a photo of your own or “settle” for this one featuring Queen RiRi. All apparel comes with free shipping, and many pieces are currently 10 percent off.
If you can imagine it, artist Negin has it for sale at ArtRoom Expo. From personalized sketches of your pet, to ready-made gallery wall kits that come with four complementary prints, these are the kinds of pieces made with you in mind. Potentially our favorite? The customized line drawings of couples kissing, which are the perfect way to decorate a new apartment or celebrate an anniversary. (And the drawings also happen to be 25 percent off right this second.)
Native West California
Listen, we’re all absolutely obsessed with The Sill, but local plant shops need love too. This one operates out of Temecula, California, and specializes in succulents, cacti, and houseplants — like the bestselling string of pearls plant pictured above. Reviewers rave about the skillful packaging, noting that their new green friends arrived happy and healthy, and ready to put out new growth within the week.
Sure, you could use the oversized coffee mugs on offer at this stoneware shop the way they’re intended, to hold your morning brew. But it doesn’t escape our attention that they’re also stunning as a vase or part of a centerpiece, so try not to pigeonhole them. The glazed, kiln-fired cup pictured here is usually $32, but leading up to Small Business Saturday, it’s just $22.
Pure Poetry Cosmetics
Transform your bathroom into a spa with the whimsical vegan bath bombs available via this Arizona shop. Depending on your vibe, you might be drawn to the inky black Dark Soul bath bombs, or the Hawaiian-inspired Fleur, redolent of florals and fruits. But for our money, it would be hard to beat the glittering Mermaid Song bath bomb, which fizzes with streaks of blue, teal, and purple as it dissolves into clouds of steamy perfume.
This list should be enough to get you started, but it represents only the tip of the iceberg of what’s available on Etsy this Small Business Saturday. Whether you’re shopping for yourself, a friend, or for the love of the game, you can rest assured that by shopping small, you’re likely helping a business in need.
